Twin for Water @HKUST

This project aims to create a hydraulic digital twin of the campus water supply network. By utilizing IoT-based sensors, real-time data analytics, and predictive modeling, it enables continuous monitoring, early leak detection, and reduces water loss.

SDG Goal 06 - Clean Water and Sanitation
SDG Goal 09 - Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure
SDG Goal 11 - Sustainable Cities and Communities

What is the problem this project is trying to address?

HKUST faces challenges with inefficient water management, rising consumption, aging infrastructure, water losses, limited data, and unpredictable demand. To address these issues, a digital twin could enable the university to visualize, monitor, and optimize its underground water network for efficient management.

How does this project support our sustainable smart campus as a living lab vision?

By optimizing water usage, reducing waste, and enabling early leak detection through real-time monitoring and predictive analytics. Also, it engages students and staff through workshops, challenges like "Water Prediction".

What's next?

Integrating with campus operations the digital twin, IoT sensors, and platform to ensure seamless use by FMO/CMO/CDO.
