This project will demonstrate a state-of-the-art wastewater treatment technology for providing a healthy ecosystem for fish and other inhabitants of the Chinese garden pond (located behind SSQ Towers 15-19). This will bring the pond back to pristine condition while creating an educational and learning opportunity.

SDG Goal 06 - Clean Water and Sanitation
SDG Goal 15 - Life On Land

What is the problem this project is trying to address?

The Chinese garden is a significant feature of our HKUST Campus as it provides nice leisure space in a beautiful natural environment. However, the current pond water is turbid, greenish in color and has become a slimy eyesore. Simply put, the ecosystem is out of balance.

How does this project support our sustainable smart campus as a living lab vision?

Turning this eyesore back into a harmonious natural ecosystem will enhance the environmental stewardship of our campus while providing an excellent educational exhibit to students and visitors by showing the operation and cycling of an eco-pond using advanced wastewater treatment technologies to achieve a well-balanced ecosystem.

What's next?

The new system will be installed in the Spring 2019. After completion, the water treatment system will be used as a vivid case study for civil and environmental engineering classes of HKUST.
